Pea Pod's Suprise Appearance On The Big Screen

Yesterday was my first OB appointment. It was scheduled for 3:00 & was supposed to be a regular pelvic exam and blood work.

They called me back and put me on the scale to get my weight (136). I would have swore it read 137, but the nurse wrote 136. I liked her figures better! We went back into a little room and went over everything that was going to be happening at the appointment (urine sample, blood work, and pelvic) and then confirmed current medications I'm taking as well as my medical history. She took my blood pressure, which was normal 120/80.

Once I provided them with the urine sample, I went and sat in another little waiting room. I hate the term waiting room because you know exactly what you're going to be doing there... waiting. Ugh...

About five minutes later they called me in to take my blood. They took so much of it that I thought they were going to drain me dry! I've never had to give so much blood before for testing! The good news is I'm getting to be a champ at giving blood! I didn't get sick, light headed, dizzy or anything AND I even sat up in the chair instead of laying down! I must have had my big girl panties on yesterday!

Then, I went back to the waiting room again. The phlebotomist told me that they didn't have a room available for me, so it would be a little while. I overheard another young lady tell her husband that the doctor I was there to see had to run off to labor and delivery. So I knew I was going to be in there for a while... waiting.

I waited for about 10-15 mins and this nurse called my name. She said she was taking me back to ultrasound. I told her that I didn't have an ultrasound scheduled for today. She said that Dr. Shirk had to run to L&D and wanted her to an ultrasound while I waited to check the baby's heartbeat. I told her that my husband would be so disappointed because he wanted to be present for all the ultrasounds. I asked if she could print pictures. She said of course could.

So, then she told me to have a seat and lay down. I asked her if I needed to go change first. She stated that she was going to try to do an abdominal ultrasound first before the transvaginal one because we may not need the TV. I said okay.

She put that warmed gel goop on my belly and put that reader on my belly. All of a sudden I just froze! There was a little human being on the big screen! I couldn't believe it but I was scared to death. I didn't want to ask, but the baby wasn't moving and I couldn't see the flicker of the heartbeat the way I did in the last ultrasound. I was scared to ask, but I finally did..."Where's the heartbeat? I don't see it. Is the baby okay?" She said, "Yes, it's right here!" Then she enlarged the screen and showed the heart beating. All of a sudden that baby went spastic! It was kicking and punching and jumping all over the place. Then I let out a squeel of joy and it jumped even more! I said, "Oh my God, did I scare it?" The tech laughed at me and said, "No, it just can't control itself at all." From that point on, the baby was continuously punching and kicking. It was amazing! The baby's heartbeat was measuring 167 bpm, which was fantastic!

I could see the little arms, legs, face, everything. I was so excited, but at the same time, I was upset because I really wanted Joe to be there. He was being cheated of this.

She printed off the pictures and sent me back out to the waiting room... to wait.... I sat there the whole time just staring at the pictures. I couldn't believe how much had changed in four weeks! The baby actually looks like a baby now, not just some ball of goop with an eyeball!

They called me back into the exam room. The doctor showed up in no time at all. He said, "Well great news, you're pregnant!" I thought, well, shoot, I already knew that! He said that he wanted to have the ultrasound done to check the heartbeat. The last time I was in there and had the ultrasound done we saw the heartbeat, which lowers the risk of miscarrage to 4%. As far along as I am now and with the heartbeat as strong as it is, my chances of miscarrying at this point is only 1%. You couldn't have slapped the smile off my face if you tried!

We went through the normal pelvic exam. He said everything looked great & the baby's stats are great. He informed me about breastfeeding. One thing I didn't know was the human body doesn't produce milk until three days after the baby is born. So I immediately asked him, well how will the baby eat? He said that newborns will live off of baby fat for that time. That's the reason most newborns lose weight at first. It's completely normal. Once the mother starts producing milk, the baby will put the weight back on. That was interesting. He said that preemies would have to be supplemented with formula right away because they don't have enough baby fat, but any baby over 7lbs is fine without eatting for 3 days. They put the baby on the breast right away to teach it to latch on and that's what helps the mother's body to start producing the milk.

He told me that the shape of my pelvis is great for vaginal birth. There shouldn't be a need for a c-section unless the baby is too big, not positioned right, or any other complications that would make a vaginal birth impossible.

So for now, everything is great! Joe's doing well, I'm doing well, and Pea Pod's doing well! Our next doctor's appointment will be in two weeks. We go at 8:15am on March 14th to do some early screening for Down Syndrome, and a few other diseases. Joe said he would be there for that appointment. They'll have to do the ultrasound to measure the fluid at the base of the baby's neck. The doctor seems to think we won't have any problems since there isn't a history of it in either one of the families.

So, here's what you've been waiting for: An updated picture of Pea Pod! He/She was 10w2d old in this picture. I think Pea Pod looks like a little clown. Check out the mouth... doesn't it look like a clown painted the mouth on? Ha ha ha ha

10 Weeks & 0 Days!

Today marks 10w0d into our pregnancy. Finally I'm feeling so much better! The fatigue has worn off a bit as have the headaches! I'm so glad! I know Joe is, too!

The belly is continuing to grow and grow and grow and grow some more! I finally had to break down and buy some maternity pants. Well, Joe bought them for me. I had enough of being uncomfortable! Last night we got my first pair of maternity jeans at Target. They're cute really! I didn't realize I would have buy new tops, too, that were longer to hide the ugly blue band that fits around my belly. So I looked pretty interesting for work today. Well, at least that how Joe explained it. I had on a summer spaghetti strap top (that is the longest top I have) and a sweater over top of it. I looked down right ridiculous if you ask me.

So tonight after work I trotted back off to Target and found they were having a ton of clearance! I bought 6 sweaters at $5.00 each! WOO HOO! They're longer maternity sweaters and they're down right cute! I also bought two more pair of pants, one pair of cargo and the other is a dressy pair for church. The cashier couldn't believe my total when she rung me up. She made a comment that I had gotten a steal of a deal considering how many clothes I purchased!

My next doctor's appointment is Friday. It's my first actual OB appointment. It'll be blood work, urine testing, and a regular pelvic exam. No ultrasounds are scheduled... BOOO. I can't wait to have another one to see how "Pea Pod" has grown!

Joe is doing well. He's still studying hard and maintaining an A average while working full-time. As you can imagine he's pretty busy! He has been trying to get more active in church, though. We're going through some rough times at church and are a little disappointed with some of things happening. So for a few months we haven't been going. Then last Wednesday night we went for dinner there and talked with some friends. We found out that at least 9 other couples have left the church because of their frustrations (same as ours). They asked us to give it a chance and stick through the rough times at the church. So, we're hanging in there. Joe is gone tonight to help out with the Teens.

Other than that, not much is going on. I'll post again after my doctor's appointment on Friday.

See ya!

It's Been A While....

Well, as they say, no news is good news! There hasn't been much happening around our house. I've been so sleepy and laying around most of the time with headaches. Other than that I'm doing great.

With all my sleeping time, Joe has got some quality study time in! He's averaging a 3.7 GPA in college, which is just fantastic! I'm so proud of him! His school sent him an application in the mail to join an honors society (Phi Beta Kappa - I think). He's really excited about that. He should be! That's an awesome accomplishment!

This morning I started the phyiscal therapy session on my back. The neurosurgeon thought that if I can get the muscles and ligaments strong to support my spine, that I would have a 80% success rate & no need for surgery! WOO HOO!!!! I'm thrilled about that! What I'm not thrilled about, though, was being at the PT at 7:00 this morning! Oh yuck! And imagine - there were other crazy people on the road at that time of the morning, too. What were they thinking????

I stopped at my favorite consignment shop this afternoon on my lunch break to see what type of maternity clothes they had. I can't do up my jeans now. I've got to move up to a bigger size and I'm not quite yet ready for maternity, but I thought I would check out some of the summer clothes, etc. Well, when I got there, I couldn't find the section. The lady said they stopped accepting materinty clothing. BUMMER!!!

But, God works in mysterious ways! When I came home from work, Joe said I had a message on the machine from one of the girls from church. She wants to give me her maternity clothing. I called her back and offered to pay for them. She said she wouldn't accept money as most of the items were given to her. Isn't it wonderful to have a church family so helpful and willing to assist when they can? I certainly hope they will fit me. What a blessing!

This past weekend, Joe bought the baby it's second gift... A set of Dr. Seuss books! He's excited about it. Aunt Jodi sent the baby a book of fairy tales. This was the baby's very first gift! The only thing I've bought the baby is actually for me... Dunstan Baby Language. I saw this lady on Oprah Winfrey a few months ago and she completely amazed me. She has a photographic memory - so to speak - for sound. Anyway, she discovered that all newborn babies, regardless of the mother's native tongue or ethnic background, make a distinctive sound prior to crying. This is the baby's language. If the baby doesn't get what it needs, then it makes it over and over until is screams and cries. So, this DVD / booklet teaches you how to hear the five baby language words. They are:

Neh - hungry
Owh - sleepy
Eh - Upper wind (gas)
Eairh - Lower wind (gas)
Heh - uncomfortable

We'll see how it goes.

My next scheduled doctor's appt is Feb. 29th. It is for bloodwork and a regular pelvic exam. There won't be an ultrasound.

Well, I need to go lay down. Good night!

Baby Carr's Debut On The Big Screen

Friday, February 1, 2008 Joe & I went to the doctor for the baby's big debut on the big screen. We got to see the baby. You can see it's head, the tail and the dark spot (an eye). We were thrilled. Immediately we saw the flickering of the heartbeat. They measured the beats and the baby's heart rhythm was at 111. The doctor said anything over 100 is fantastic! We're right on schedule for a September 24th delivery. I was originally told the EDD was September 25th, but then they said September 24th, so it'll be anywhere within two weeks (give or take). So here's the one and only picture we have. Look toward the right top of the slant and you'll see the dark spot where one of the eyes are!

Dreams - It's a girl

Last night I had the most vivid dream.. It was quite scary! My baby was born with hair, clothes, and jewelry. She was a total DIVA! Strawberry blonde hair with bright baby blue eyes. She came out talking. I can't remember what she said, but she was talking! Oh my gosh!!! I'm a freak!!!

Good news from the doctor!

The bloodwork I had done today resulted in good news! The first draw on Monday, January 21st to test my hCG level was 2800. The draw today was 6600! That's more than double! The doctor told me not to think so much in numbers as that's not what is important. The important issue is that the hormone doubles. So we're doing great!!!

He said the progesterone level was at very high level of 50ng, which is massive. He said that is great because the ovary is protecting the pregnancy well. Most average pregnancies in the first five to six weeks only reach 12-20ng. Most first trimesters will end with a maximum progesterone level at a maximum of 47ng. So needless to say, my body is doing great work!

Here's some info I found on the American Pregnancy Organization website:

Guideline to hCG levels during pregnancy:
hCG levels in weeks from LMP (gestational age)* :

3 weeks LMP: 5 - 50 mIU/ml
4 weeks LMP: 5 - 426 mIU/ml
5 weeks LMP: 18 - 7,340 mIU/ml
6 weeks LMP: 1,080 - 56,500 mIU/ml
7 - 8 weeks LMP: 7,650 - 229,000 mIU/ml
9 - 12 weeks LMP: 25,700 - 288,000 mIU/ml
13 - 16 weeks LMP: 13,300 - 254,000 mIU/ml
17 - 24 weeks LMP: 4,060 - 165,400 mIU/ml
25 - 40 weeks LMP: 3,640 - 117,000 mIU/ml
Non-pregnant females: <5.0>

Guideline to Progesterone levels during pregnancy:
• 1-28 ng/ml Mid Luteal Phase (Average is over 10 for un-medicated cycles and over 15 with medication use)•

9-47 ng/ml First trimester •

17-146 ng/ml Second Trimester •

49-300 ng/ml Third Trimester

With those figures 6600 hCG and 50ng Progesterone, he said there should be no reason why we can't do an ultrasound next week to see the baby. He said that by next week I'll be at 6 weeks. So we set an appointment for the first ultrasound on Friday, February 01, 2008 at 2:15.

WOO HOOO I can't wait to see this little grain of rice in my belly! hee hee hee!!!

Chinese Gender Chart

Okay, okay, okay - I know this sounds wacky, but let's try it and see....

There is an ancient Chinese Gender Chart that was found in a royal tomb near Beijing. It is said to be over 90% accurate. What you do is match the age you were at conception with the month in which you conceived and that predicts the gender...

Looks like it's a boy...

Now let's wait a few months and see what the doctor has to say!

Due Date

I went to the doctor yesterday and found out the baby's due date is September 25th. How exciting!! It all seems so unreal. The doctor confused me though saying I was 4 weeks and 4 days pregnant based upon the first day of my last menstural cycle, but then turned around and said I probably didn't ovulate until around January 3rd or so. That's why the blood work I had done on January 5th tested negative to the hCG hormone. So actually I'm less than two weeks pregnant, not four. Oh well... He said they go by the menstural cycle not the date of conception.

He said it is too early to do an ultra sound as nothing would show on it. I told him I was concerned because I had a feeling in my lower right side of my tummy that feels like I pulled a muscle when I stand up, turn or move a certain way, or sneeze. He said that is common of two things; 1.) round ligament pain - which is way too early for that or 2.) the cyst on my ovary keeping me pregnant until the placenta is developed is having pressure put on it. Either way it's very normal, but the bad thing there is nothing they can do about it.

He was concerned about the urine sample they took because although it was positive, it was very slightly positive, which could mean one of two things; 1.) I'm extremely early in my pregnancy (hCG is produced and doubles every 48 hours in strength) or 2.) It could be a sign of miscarriage. So the doctor took my blood yesterday and will take it again Thursday morning just to make sure that the hormone is doubled as it should be for a normal pregnancy.

During my exam he did say that my uterus didn't feel swollen or anything, which is another indicator that I'm either very early in the pregnancy or there may be a miscarriage.

So please pray for a healthy, normal pregnancy for me and that we may be blessed with a healthy baby come September. If it's God's will, it will be done.

Love you all!

Choices, Choices

Yesterday afternoon Joe & I went to a baby store in the mall to check things out. The cribs, the crib sets, nursery decor, etc. We left there and went to Babys R Us and found the cutest crib that we both loved. I'll post a picture at the bottom. We've got plenty of time to get that all planned out, though. It's the cleaning out and tossing of items to make the nursery that makes me feel uneasy.

Speaking of un-easy, I experienced my first bout with naseau last night. Okay, that sucked! I was so tired & exhausted and worn out and had a horrible sick stomach on top of that. This is awful feeling at times! Some women say they've never felt better than during their pregnancy... ughhh... REALLY???

Once I get my appointment and find out more information & extactly how far along we are, I'll update this blog. Keep checking here, though, because I try to update things a couple of times a week to keep everyone up to date...

By the way, does anyone have bigger jeans I could wear??? LOL

Welcome!

2007 certainly was a great year for us! We had somewhat of an "event" that took place...(aka wedding)! We also went on an awesome tropical island for our honeymoon. If we had the money, we would move in a heartbeat! We became the proud Great-Aunt & Great-Uncle to Garrett on Thanksgiving Day. There were showers, teas, bachelor and bachelorette parties, rehearsal, meetings with vendors, etc. It seem as if 2007 came and went in the blink of an eye.

Now we've found ourselves in a new year. It is going to be a good year. At least we hope. So far this year we've spent some big $ from home repairs to medical tests. We've had the HVAC system replaced on the house, a new water heater put in (last night), and some plumbing work done.

This morning I trotted off to the hospital (at 6:15am) for an MRI and X-rays of my back. So needless to say, 2008 will be a good year...it can only get better! :-)

So how about those annoying New Year's Resolutions? Has anyone made any? Not me. Why promise yourself you're going to do something only to break it?

Look out 2008, here we come!
